Riyadh The Thriving City...
Riyadh, which means 'Gardens', most
probably acquired this name since it was
one of the rare spots in the desert that
had water and fertile soil. Within half a
century the tiny village has turned into a
modern, giant city covering an urban area
of 1,782 km2 with approximately 950 km2
of developed area.
Riyadh is one of the fastest expanding
cities in the world, accompanied by fast
population growth. It has witnessed
consequent booms over the last decade
reaching an annual average of 8.1%.
While the population was only 30,000
in the 1930's, Riyadh currently has a
population of 4.5 million and it is
expected to reach 6 million by 2007.
Two-thirds of Riyadh's population are
Saudis.The other third are non-Saudis
(44% Arabs, 50% Asians, 1% Westerners
and 4% other nationals).
The Saudi citizens of Riyadh are highly
educated. All 12 - 19 year olds attend
school and many 20 - 24 year olds attend
higher education institutes. Over 25% of
university graduates (25 - 40 years) are
employed in key positions.
